How much do you charge per word? I've been bombarded with this question a zillion times, and my answer has always been the same - There is no fixed number.

Let me explain why.

Per-word rate

In freelance content writing, price per word can look attractive. But I don't think it is a good measurement tool. Let me explain why. No matter what the topic is, from creating an idea to conducting the research, there are a lot of pre-writing steps. Post-writing steps, such as editing and proofreading, are also part of every work. Every topic is different. So, the time and effort required for ideation, research, writing, and editing will also vary accordingly. So, shouldn't writers have the liberty to analyze the effort needed for every gig carefully and charge accordingly? Why should they be forced to mention a per-word rate during the initial discussion?

Per-page rate, an extended version or per-word rate, also doesn't apply for all the abovementioned reasons.

Per-hour rate

If I bill clients at hourly rates, I run by the clock, and I do not know how to justify that calculation. Let me tell you the reason - I cannot write for a certain number of hours continuously, without a break. I need intermittent breaks to recharge and rejuvenate. I know that deadline means everything, but I cannot go on an overworking spree and burnout.

So, how will I decide what the charges must be?

I combine all the metrics and give customized quotes based on requirements (research, writing, editing, and proofreading). This method has been effective for projects of all sizes. This method is highly suitable when I don't know the exact word count or the time and effort required for research, editing, and proofreading.
